You swing your great sword at the goblin king’s head and roll a 15! But how do you describe what a bare 15 means in terms of the fiction of the game? Creating that diegetic experience is what Smirk & Dagger’s Adventure Party: The Role-Playing Party Game is all about.
Each player starts by claiming one of a dozen different characters and a 20-sided die. You’ll be dealt a few Item Cards and one player starts the game as the GM, or Guess Master. The GM pulls a random Adventure Card, reads the scenario out loud, and asks the other players what they do. One by one, you’ll each describe how you’re using one of your item cards to defeat the current monster, then roll your 20-sided die behind your screen so only you can see it, and then, based on how well (or poorly) you rolled, you’ll narrate what happens. The GM can ask a clarifying question, and then each of the players sets their own die to the number they think you rolled. Those who guess closest score points. After three or so such scenarios, the player with the most points wins the game.
This is a fun game, a sort of Superfight meets Codenames, where you use your descriptions of what happens to communicate hidden information to your fellow players. The real fun comes in describing poor rolls, which usually results in hilarious descriptions of characters tripping over themselves, each other, and the terrain cause them to fail catastrophically.
Adventure Party: The Role-Playing Party Game can entertain between three and eight players, and you can easily control the length of the game by how many scenarios you complete. This is a great game to play while waiting for the rest of the group to show up, especially since it’s easy to jump in after the game has already started. If you’re a DM who wants practice coming up with creative ways to describe the dice rolls of your players, this is a great game for you. If you enjoy making your friends crack up with your silly stories, this game is perfect for you.
